This piece takes its name from the famous
Lewis Carroll poem, Jabberwocky. Like Jabberwocky, the central poem looks
at the meanings of words and what information written words and poems can
pass on. It is something that I wrote to have a very singsong-like quality,
with short lines, quick and obvious rhymes, and is a straightforward song
that can be appreciated for its simplicity and superficial qualities. Ironically,
in stating the idea of valuing shallow beauty without the need for a deeper
meaning the poem contradicts itself and does just this--it conveys a deeper
concept. Contrasting this is the background of words, lines and phrases that
have no apparent cohesive meaning. Added to this seeming gibberish is the
fact that they are turned on their side and thus harder to read. Viewers can
choose to take whatever meanings they wish from the words and phrases if they
recognize a quote or a name for example, or step back and just enjoy the visual
aspects that the words create.
