Venus?
is an interpretation of the 1486 painting The Birth of Venus, by the early
Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli. In it, he offers the viewer a classical
image of the goddess, thought to be the purest female form. Botticelli’s
figure is iconic and synonymous with the concept of beauty, with her flowing
hair, generous hips, and gentle hands modestly covering her petite breasts.
Here she is presented in simpler colors and a more modern style. The fact
that her face is not shown and the way that the image is cropped focuses the
viewer’s attention on her body and generalizes her so that she could
be any woman today. How have time and different cultures affected the standards
of a perfect human form? Would our perfect female figure still be Venus?
