Hawaii Inc. examines the modernization of the state of Hawaii. The image is constructed out of the Hawaiian coat of arms, and the overlapping letters “H” and “I”. The luxury designer pattern and colors of the piece are symbolic of the wealth and opulence that modernization can bring, though some may wince at the artificiality and development that usually accompanies this. The golden brackets that hold the canvas off of the wall hint that there is something behind it all, though it is unclear what. The split in the middle allows light to shine through the middle section and suggests that many of the ideas of Hawaii’s future are also split. Old and new, developed and undeveloped, “cultured” and “uncultured” Hawaii are just some of the contrasts that are represented in this piece, each of which from certain perspectives can be seen as shiny and beautiful.
