The diptych Majesty confronts the viewer with a contrast of overlapping canvases and images. The smaller canvas in the back is filled with the primeval stone that the natural Hawaiian landscape is made of. A dark night sky looms over this ancient and untouched landscape, which literally, chronologically and metaphorically sits behind its larger counterpart. The scaffold-like structure that stands in the foreground of the larger canvas is constructed of the Hawaiian coat of arms and the over-lapping letters “H” and “I”. The Louis Vuitton-like pattern brings a feeling of the new and artificial elements that make up modern-day Hawaii and its upper classes. The two canvases combined create a silhouette of the headdress of an ancient Hawaiian ali’i, or king, who can be seen taking a picture of himself in front what has become so foreign to him.
